Underlays for Discontinuous Roofing& Underlays for Wall- EN 13859-1 & EN 13859-2

Recently, 2 harmonized standards have been published regarding the waterproofing sheets used underlays for roof and wall. The list of standards for the said waterproofing materials is given below.

Underlays for discontinuous roofing

EN 13859-1

Underlays for wall

EN 13859-2

In general, these product standards describe the characteristics of polymer bituminous sheets, including testing, marking and labelling procedures, and the articles for affixing CE marking with systems of assessment and verification of constancy of performance (AVCP) are given in the ZA annexes of these standards.

Systems of assessment and verification of constancy of performance (AVCP) are determined according to the table below given in EN 13859-1 and EN 13859-2 standards.

* Products/materials for which a clearly identifiable stage in the production process results in an improvement of the reaction to fire classification (e.g. an addition of fire retardants or a limiting of organic materials)
** Products/materials not covered by footnote (*)

Note: Only System 1 or System 3 is applied because an initial type test is required to determine the resistance to water permeation of all products. The inclusion of System 4 here indicates that testing is not required to determine the reaction to fire class F.

In general, it turns out that the Systems of assessment and verification of constancy of performance of the Wall/ roof underlays is system 3. Only fire-related properties of the products with reaction to fire class F need to be evaluated within system 4. For products with reaction to fire class A1-E, reaction to fire tests must be carried out by notified laboratories, while no fire test is required for class F products. Accordingly, in the EN 13859-1 and EN 13859-2 standards, which cover the relevant product groups, the duties of the manufacturers within the scope of system 3 are determined with the table given below.

Tasks

Content of the task

Tasks for the manufacturer

Factory product control (FPC)

Parameters related to essential characteristics of Table ZA.1 relevant fort he intended use.

Determination of the product-type on the basis of type testing (including sampling), type calculation, tabulated values or descriptive documentation of the product

Essential characteristics of Table ZA.1 relevant fort he intended use, which are declared, except reaction to fire and watertightness

Initial type testing by a notified test laboratory

Watertightness and water vapour permeability, reaction to fire (A1, A2, B, C)**, D, E of Table ZA.1.

Duties within the scope of system 3 for EN 13859-1 & EN 13859-2

Tests Required to be Performed by Notified Laboratories: For these products included in System 3, the control activities of the notified test laboratory, under the responsibility of the manufacturer, are limited to watertightness, water vapor permeability and reaction to fire. The manufacturer is responsible for the application of other tests given in the ZA.1 table.
